BRIEF
BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Abdelilah Arredouani joined QBRI in March 2012 as a Scientist and he is a member of the Diabetes Research Center. Dr. Arredouani holds a Special diploma in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Management and a Ph.D. from Belgium and prior to joining QBRI he worked in Netherlands, United Kingdom and Qatar. During his Ph.D., he studied the role of the endoplasmic reticulum calcium stores in glucose-induced calcium response and insulin secretion from the pancreatic beta cell in the context of type 2 diabetes. He started his postdoctoral training in the Department of Neurosciences at Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands and moved to Oxford University in the United Kingdom to work in the Department of Pharmacology where he investigated the role of the calcium mobilizing messenger NAADP in glucose-induced calcium response and insulin secretion in pancreatic beta cell. He was a key player in the discovery of the NAADP receptor (two pore channels or TPC) and Ned-19, a specific antagonist of the NAADP. While at Weill Cornell medical college in Qatar, Dr. Arredouani worked on the trafficking of ORAI1, a calcium channel involved in store-operated calcium entry.
RESEARCH
INTEREST
Dr. Arredouani’s current research focuses on the understanding of the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes. He is involved in different projects including the understanding of the mechanisms that underlie the remission of type 2 diabetes after bariatric surgery, the identification of biomarkers to predict future development of type 2 diabetes, the association of the copy number variation of the salivary alpha amylase with obesity and type 2 diabetes, as well as the role of heat shock proteins in the development of obesity and diabetes. Dr. Arredouani is an expert in calcium signaling and cellular physiology and combines molecular and cellular techniques with systems biology approaches, mainly metabolomics, in his investigations.
